History Never REPEATS!

Dahlia Lithwick on civic courage.

Yet another reason we should all learn history from multiple points-of-view, not just the one spoon-fed to us. If you aren’t willing to defend your opinions or accept the pressure of espousing an unpopular view, then do you really believe that? How many thousands of Americans have died at the hands of other Americans, sticking to their beliefs?

Go forth and learn.

(Don’t you like what I did with the title? Repeating off another post dealing with the same subject, showing how those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it??

History Never Repeats

“When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.”
–”The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”

So. The Kid is out of school for the summer. Got good grade in History. But not real history. Only the kind of useless junk you learn in school. Which is funny because I’ve been reading some more in-depth history lately. Richard Ellis and his books on the Founding Fathers. James Lowen and his Lies books (currently on Lies Across America, which is about the veracity of historical markers across the country (and listening to “Think” on KERA).

How can we know where we are going if we don’t know where we’ve been?  We can’t.  That is why we keep arguing about the same stuff, decade after decade.  We get behind other countries and, suddenly, it is important to teach real science.  We get ahead and start coasting and psuedo-science shoves itself in and we fall behind again.  We get some measure of equity between the wealthy and middle and lower classes, then we get complacent and the Robber Barons return.

So remember, school is there to indoctrinate your children. It is your job to educate them.
